I'm Back Online! and Red Sonja comments.

Thu May 14, 2009, 4:38 AM
I haven't posted or participated in any substantial way here on DA for a few months now , and that's been bad. A recent hurried move knocked me off kilter , but now the pieces are coming back together! Sorry to those of you who liked to see my stuff ; I didn't die or lose interest or anything.
My scanner didn't survive the move , so I had to scramble for cash to get re-equipped , which took awhile. I'm now properly equipped and ready to post new stuff.
It also seems I'm on something of a mission , trivial as it may be. I like Red Sonja in the comics. But:
I HATE THE WAY MOST ARTISTS DRAW RED SONJA IN THE COMICS!
And , to be honest , I'm sure my version is considered ugly by many as well. But I do not like that "Skinny Supermodel With A Replica Sword" thing.
Frank Thorne's version seemed to work pretty well, he gave her a manic intensity and solidity of figure combined with his organically graphic style that lent Sonja some gravity. And I found Liam Sharpe's version had a toned athleticism that projected believability. Sure , the whole Red Sonja thing is ridiculous and can't be taken seriously. I just get annoyed at the notion that the thin and listless model-style physique is the one considered the pinnacle of female beauty by a whole lot of guys who draw women in the comics. Even if you compare the build of a fit female athlete to a model's build , you'll see quite a difference. Artists used to be sensitive about this kind of thing. Is it more likely that a woman swinging heavy steel weapons around regularly would be built like Kate Moss , or more like fitness model Timea Majorova? But at the end , I'll admit it's all fantasy anyway. And the prevailing fantasy is the Supermodel with a Replica Sword. More's the pity.

~ When you love something, you have to learn to hate, too.

~ Everybody thinks differently which can also mean that some people would do bad things.
